Music
Key Stage 3
All students receive one lesson of music each week up to the end of KS3. Students experience a wide range of musical activities including singing, instrumental playing, listening and appraising, music theory, composition and performance.
All students have the opportunity to learn an instrument if they so choose. There is a school choir and an orchestra; rehearsals for these take place at lunchtime. During a school year students have the chance to take part in the Christmas performance, the Celebration of Music at Oswaldtwistle, and a school performance in the summer term. Year 7 students have the opportunity to present the Christmas performance as part of their practical music experience.
Key Stage 4
KS4 music is offered in Years 10 and 11, when students can develop their skills to a higher level culminating in a GCSE. At present students have to perform individually and in an ensemble, produce a composition based on the Area of Study "Music for a Special Event" and complete a second composition as the integrated assignment in Year 11; this uses the other areas of study - Orchestral Landmarks, the Popular Song since 1960, Music for Dance and Music for Film. Students also sit a listening exam at the end of the course, based on the five areas of study.
