Key Stage 4

The Aims of the Course

Becoming media ‘savvy’ is essential in the modern universe. Apart from anything else, we are bombarded with information on a daily basis from all sorts of sources: from the print media to the moving image and the job of this course is to help you sift through it all and make sense of what you see. Of course, you will also get the chance to create your own media productions from the still image to animation. By studying the media, you will:

  • develop your investigation skills, critical thinking and decision-making skills through the study of modern issues that are relevant to the world you live in
  • develop your appreciation and critical understanding of the media and its role in your daily life
  • develop your practical and creative skills through opportunities to create your own media productions
  • understand how to use media concepts and ideas to analyse media productions

The Content of the Course

The course will take you on a journey from the still image to the moving image. Along the way, you will study a variety of media types from the CD covers to clips from action films and you will get the chance to reproduce some of these – some may be with paper and crayons, some a little more high-tech. During this study, you will develop skills in the key concepts of the media, which will give you an excellent grounding for the exam. Including preparation for the exam, you will learn about:
