Key Stage 3

Year 7

For the first half of the academic year, Year 7 pupils will study a unit entitled Medieval Realms. This unit focuses on the Norman Conquest of Britain, why and how it happened and the consequences.

This is followed by a study of Britain 1500-1750 with a focus on the Tudor and Stuart periods and the challenges that faced the monarchy.

Year 8

To complete the study of Britain, the period 1750-1900 is explored, with the focus on the immense changes to agriculture, industry and Empire and the implications of these changes to the population.

In order for students to appreciate the experiences of other cultures and people, the focus for the next unit of work is entitled Black Peoples of the Americas. This unit begins with a study of the slave trade in Africa which then leads to the consequences of slave movement and the resulting struggle for integration within modern day America.

Year 9

To allow pupils to appreciate the world in which we live today the first half of the academic year is spent on the events in the early 20th century, looking at the politics behind World War One, and the war itself. A research project on the key events of World War One is also undertaken.

This is followed by looking at the causes of World War Two, the mistakes made after World War One and the rise of the Nazi Party. A research project is undertaken on the effects of war on the home front.

Lastly, a short but powerful unit is studied about the Holocaust which allows students to gain a greater understanding and reflect on this horrendous event in history.
