Year 7
Social, Emotional Aspects of Learning A unit looking at different coping strategies for when young people are faced with problems Sex Education Students will study the changes a young person goes through during puberty Introduction to Citizenship A unit providing students with a sample of different aspects of citizenship that influence us as humans: students will look at the following issues: Crime, refugees and asylum seekers, discrimination, rights and responsibilities, human rights and the difference between a dictatorship and a democracy Drug Education – smoking/alcohol Students will study the effects of smoking and drinking alcohol What is work? A unit that provides students with an introduction to the world of work
Year 8
The Community, friends and family Students will look at the different groups that make up the community today, issues that can affect communities and how as citizens they can contribute towards making their community a better place to live Students will look at relationships between friends and family and how to tackle issues that arise in these relationships Animal Rights A unit addressing the issue of animal right abuses and the rights that animals should have Sex Education Students will study the different types of contraception that are available and how effective they are Race, Identity and Diversity A unit of lessons where students will complete a questionnaire and on the basis of that information produce their own emblem reflecting their identity; students will study the life of a refugee and the reasons why people leave their countries Drug Education Students will study different drugs and their effects on an individual’s body and their lives
Year 9
Human Rights A unit addressing different aspects of children’s human rights as guaranteed by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Students will study the following: Child soldiers, Child labour, the rights guaranteed under the United Nations Convention, HIV/Aids and how it affects young people across Africa Healthy Eating and Body Image Students will study the importance of healthy eating as well as the effect of eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia Options Choices at 13+ Students will be provided with an overview of the different subjects that are available. Over the course of the lessons students will be expected to assess their own skills and ability as a means to making the right key stage 4 choices Politics and Democracy A unit of lessons where students will study the difference between local and national government, the different types of political systems, the local election process, the role of a member of parliament Bullying Students will study the different types of bullying and the effects of bullying on the victim Hotel Rwanda A unit providing students with an insight into the civil conflict in Rwanda that took place in 1994; students will produce a newspaper story reflecting on the civil war between the Hutus and the Tutsis
